The Economics of Reproductive Freedom

When we talk about reproductive freedom, we’re also talking about economic freedom. The ability to make decisions about pregnancy and parenting shapes nearly every part of a person’s financial future: education, work, housing, and long-term stability. Yet across the South, extremists continue passing bans that push people deeper into economic crisis and widen inequality.

As families in North Carolina look ahead to the holidays, one truth is clear: reproductive rights are not just a healthcare issue. They’re an economic one.

The Price of Losing Control

When politicians restrict abortion access, they’re taking away opportunity. Research shows that people denied abortion care are more likely to fall into poverty and less likely to finish school. For students and young professionals, being forced to carry an unintended pregnancy can derail entire career paths before they begin.

Reproductive freedom determines whether someone can stay in school, keep a job, or support a family on their terms. For working parents, especially in low-wage jobs without paid leave, new restrictions turn already tight budgets into impossible ones.

The Hidden Costs of Traveling for Care

In 2025, with much of the South enforcing total or near-total abortion bans, North Carolina has become one of the few remaining access points. Patients are traveling across multiple states and absorbing costs that few can manage: gas, lodging, childcare, and lost wages.

Even for residents, new state restrictions carry steep financial consequences. Waiting periods, mandatory appointments, and reduced clinic availability create delays that push care further out of reach. These burdens are intentional. They are designed to make exercising a legal right nearly impossible.

When Reproductive Freedom Strengthens Communities

When people can plan their futures freely, families and communities thrive. Access to abortion supports stable households, stronger local economies, and higher workforce participation. It helps keep people in school, at work, and able to support themselves.

The opposite is equally true. Restricting access strains healthcare systems, worsens maternal health outcomes, and increases long-term costs for families. In a state already serving thousands of out-of-state patients, these ripple effects are profound.

Reproductive freedom isn’t only a moral or political imperative. It’s sound economic policy.

How PCNC Is Fighting Back

At Pro-Choice North Carolina, we are confronting the economic harm caused by abortion restrictions directly. Our work focuses on removing barriers, expanding access, and giving people the tools they need to navigate an increasingly hostile landscape.

  • We expose deceptive anti-abortion centers so people don’t lose time, money, or their health to misinformation.
  • We train and support campus leaders who bring honest, inclusive reproductive health information directly to students — meeting young people where they are before misinformation reaches them.
  • We partner with independent clinics and abortion funds to strengthen the network that helps patients overcome logistical, financial, and travel barriers to care.
  • We combat disinformation statewide because confusion is a cost, and extremists rely on that confusion to push people into crisis.
  • We mobilize communities to advocate for policies that support reproductive freedom, economic security, and family stability.

Every step we take reduces the economic burdens imposed by abortion restrictions and moves North Carolina toward a more just, equitable future.

Investing in Freedom Is Investing in Stability

At Pro-Choice North Carolina, we know that reproductive freedom and economic justice are inseparable. Your support fuels organizing, strengthens access to care, and pushes back against the disinformation that keeps people trapped in cycles of poverty and control.

As we close out the year, we invite you to consider making a gift before December 31. Your generosity helps ensure that our communities have the resources, protections, and truth they need to navigate an increasingly hostile landscape — and to build a future where everyone has the power to decide their own path.

Together, we can create a stronger, more equitable North Carolina.
