When Abortion Falls, Democracy Falls With It

When extremists attack abortion, they’re not just targeting healthcare; they’re targeting our democracy. Across the country, politicians are working to strip away reproductive freedom while also restricting voting rights, censoring schools, and silencing marginalized communities. These fights are deeply connected because they’re all about one thing: control.

And right now, North Carolina is one of the key battlegrounds.

The Connection Between Rights

Reproductive rights don’t exist in isolation. The same groups pushing abortion bans are also undermining democracy itself. We see it in laws that make it harder to vote, in book bans that erase history, and in efforts to roll back protections for LGBTQ+ people. Every one of these attacks chips away at our personal freedom and community power — and when one right falls, the rest follow.

Why North Carolina Is Ground Zero

North Carolina has become both a lifeline and a testing ground. After Roe v. Wade was overturned, most neighboring states passed near-total abortion bans. NC is now one of only two states in the South where abortion is still legal up to 12 weeks, which means patients are traveling from across the region for care — and our clinics and providers are stretched to the limit.

At the same time, extremist lawmakers are advancing a dangerous agenda here at home. They’re pushing new abortion restrictions, gerrymandering voting maps to weaken communities of color, and censoring what teachers can say about race and gender.

Just this month, a new lawsuit has just been filed to challenge North Carolina’s latest congressional map, saying it intentionally dilutes the voting power of Black residents and Democratic voters. The map, approved earlier this month, is explicitly gerrymandered to give Republicans another congressional seat. By manipulating district lines to lock in power, extremists can keep pushing unpopular policies — including abortion restrictions — without accountability to voters.

National groups see North Carolina as a proving ground. If they win here, they’ll export this playbook across the country.

Why It Matters

When politicians restrict reproductive freedom, it doesn’t just affect abortion care — it affects whether people can decide when and whether to start families, finish school, or build financial stability. Once leaders succeed in stripping away one right, they’re emboldened to take even more.

Democracy only works when we can vote freely, speak openly, and get the healthcare we need. If we don’t act now, abortion bans will get harsher, misinformation will keep spreading, and more communities will be silenced. The rights we lose today could take generations to win back.

What We Can Do Together

Fighting back means refusing to stay quiet. It means organizing in our communities, voting in every election, speaking the truth, and standing with those most affected. Everyone has a role to play — and together, our voices build real power.

At Pro-Choice North Carolina, we’re not waiting for things to get worse. Through our mis-and disinformation project, we’re exposing the lies that fuel extremist policies. Our ongoing anti-abortion center accountability work helps communities demand real healthcare and push back against deception. And through our Campus Leader Program, we’re training the next generation of advocates to stand up for abortion access, voting rights, and equity in their schools and communities.

This fight is urgent; it’s happening right now in North Carolina, and it’ll take all of us to win.
