Your Primary Vote Starts the 2026 Election

Many of us have been looking forward to voting on federal and state candidates since November 6, 2024. The wait is over–the 2026 election has started! Tuesday, March 3rd, is Primary Election Day in North Carolina, and the candidates we elect today will have a huge impact in the November 2026 general election.

The overwhelming spectacle of Presidential primaries every four years, with wall-to-wall media coverage, constant polling, candidate rallies, and televised debates, can make other primary races pale in comparison. It is a missed opportunity to bring your voice to many important races, though, if you skip the primary! In a significant number of races, the primary winner will also win the general election in November (because the general election is either uncontested or uncompetitive). Or if you have ever looked at your ballot in November and thought, “I really would like to have voted for XYZ candidate instead,” – the primary is your chance to get your preferred candidates on the November general election ballot. Primaries are about expanding our impact on elections.

Often, fewer people vote in primaries than in general elections. One reason is that voters may not pay attention to elections outside November, in part because primary elections take place on different days in different states. Another reason may be that people are less familiar with primary candidates and feel less invested in those races. And finally, primary elections are for political party voters (i.e., Democrats and Republicans), leaving many Unaffiliated voters in North Carolina under the impression that they can’t vote in primaries.

Let’s address each of these reasons to make sure you, your friends, and your family have everything you need to vote in the North Carolina primary elections:

Primary election day in North Carolina is Tuesday, March 3rd!

  • Early Voting is underway now and runs through Saturday, February 28th.
  • During Early Voting, you can vote at any early voting site in the county you are registered in.
  • During Early Voting, you can register and vote the same day. You can also update your registration and fix any issues.
  • On Election Day, you must vote at the polling site listed on your registration. You must also already be registered to vote on Election Day.
  • To find the details you need on Early Voting and Election Day sites, polling hours, and more, check the NC State Board of Elections website.
You can print your sample ballot now and research the candidates and races on it.
  • Check out the candidate websites to learn more about their platforms.
  • Look to see if they have any public events you can attend to learn more.
  • Check for candidate endorsements from your local media and from organizations you support.
  • Contact the candidate's offices and ask about the issues important to you!

Unaffiliated voters can vote in a political primary even though they are not registered with the party. Just ask for the party ballot you want to use when you arrive at the polling place. You can also ask for a nonpartisan ballot if available (e.g., for some school boards and local government races).

  • Unaffiliated voters can only vote one ballot, so be sure to choose the ballot with the candidates you want to vote for.
  • Note: Voters registered with a political party can only vote in that party’s primary.

See you at the polls!
